From the very beginning of its life, people have questioned if the 996 is a real 911. It is slab sided, has headlights that look like two fried eggs sitting on the front fenders, and worst of all is water cooled. No one will argue that it is a wonderful car to drive, and has incredible performance, but that still doesn't make it a real 911. With the release of the 997, Porsche has tried to bring back some of the 911ness. The round lights are back, so are the fender flares and some of the feel of the older cars. Since Porsche has admitted, identified and arguably fixed the problems, does this leave the 996 out in the cold? Will the 996 go down in history as the biggest mistake Porsche ever made?

Although 996 is a "let down" of the 911 bred, I believe that the 996 has set the most eccentric look of all the 911s. Seeing that the 997 design is heavily based on the 996, the 996 body has proved to be at least modern.

the 996 is a bad *** ride hands down. the headlights suck and they could have given it more 911ness but you have to admit it is a nice performing machine and if you dont like it what do us carnutz do. We change. Do a headlight swap  and enjoy that bad boy.
