Hey guys, I just bought a 92 GTI 8v and I was wondering if I can get some recomendations on suspension. I will use the car for autocrossing and as a daily driver(once I get some problems fixed) I am looking for something that is kind of aggressive, but not full on road race teeth rattling stiff. I am finding it hard to justify spending 1200 on coilovers for a car that is worth about the same so shocks and springs seem like the way to go. What would everyone recomend?

Also thoughts on swaybars and tie bars?

I had HandR springs and Bilsteins on my mk2 and I loved it. It wasn't too stiff but handled great. You could go with Konis instead of the Bilsteins if your looking for some amount of adjustability. I had stock sway bars on mine, but I have driven a few with either just a rear bar, or both front and rear. It defintiely tightens it up and gets rid of the body roll. It also has tnedency to pick up the inside rear tire even more. I had a front tie bar on mine, and I could feel the difference. There are some nice rear tie bars out there, but the ones that really work well, also take up your trunk space since they are triangulated. I also moved the battery from the engine compartment to the trunk. I could feel a difference, some people would argue with me. I replaced the regular battery with an optima at the same time. so I took 45lbs off the very furthest forward point on the car and put less than 30lbs in the rear most point.
If you are going to AutoX, you may want to check into classes before you decide what your going to do.

I agree 100%.  Look at what you want to do w/ your car first.  You seem to want to do a mild suspension upgrade.  Look into the Patec Hole Shot Coilovers.  They are a streetable coilover setup that is fully adjustable.  I have a set that are valved for the VR6 engine in my MKII.  If you relocate your battery place it in the back rear or right behind the passenger seat w/ a boat box.  If you do the coilovers toy w/ different ride heights.  the MKII will perform better if your front control arms are parallel to the ground.  If you are going to autoX it, disconnect your front sway bar and it should turn in better.   If you want to go to a better rear sway bar you have some options.  first one is go possibly to a SRS rear sway bar.  it is thick as *** and will make the rear of your car pretty squirly but will help out.  OR, if you don't want to spend the money on a rear sway bar get some boiler plate and weld it across the back where your rear sway bar goes....    Like he stated upper stress bars help out tremendously also.

Anything you do to your suspension is a give and take.
