Hey guys I am considering buying a 944 turbo as first a project and then eventually as a daily driver. What is the cost of building a decent used 944 into a reliiable daily driver. I ahve seen some nice cars for around 6 grand that won't need hardly any body work. What should I look for when buying a used 944 turbo.

the Porsche 951 ( 944 turbo ) is a fantastic car. They have incredible balance, very comfortable, lots of potential for mods, and are realtively affordable. European Car did a whole series of articles on project 951 that might interest you. PART 1 For all installments you can visit our Project Car Page
The articles have most of the answers your looking for, but just quickly; the cost to build a 944 for a daily driver is fairly cheap. You may want to find one that has had a recent clutch install. The clutch is kind of a pain since half the car has to be disassembled to get to it. Expect to pay at least a grand in labor to do the clutch and parts can cost anywhere from about 700 up to a couple grand depending on what kind of hp numbers you are looking to hold. The timing belt, water pump thing on the 944s are notorious for being expensive, but if it is something you actually consider and factor in to the cost of ownership beforehand, it isn't that big of deal.
Always get a prepurchase inspection done by an experienced Porsche shop, it may cost a couple hundred up front, but it can save you thousands of dollars and many tears in the long run.
If your a young driver (under 25) insurance is going to be expensive considering the age and value of the car. Once you get a little older they won't soak you so much for having a sprots car, but keep in mind it still says turbo on it.
You have the right idea with cars that don't need body work. Most people can do most of the basic repairs on the themselves to save some money, but body work is something I would always leave to a pro. Just make sure the car doesn't look incredible because they just painted the whole thing after the owner was T-Boned by an Explorer, but thats what the inspection is for.
Good luck, post up some pics when you get one.
