I have a 97 golf 4 door and I wanted some suggestions for engines that I could put in.  I was wondering if anyone knows if there are any porsche engines that would work and I also want to know if I could put a vr6 2.8 in it.  Thanks for your help.

The easiest swap by far would be to find a similar year Golf or Jetta VR6 and swap that in. Everything would be bolt in and plug and play and all parts would transfer straight from the donor car. A 1.8t would be considerably more work but still do-able.

any Porsche engine is going to be a project and a half. It has been done a few times, but generally involves large amounts of fabrication converting the car to rear wheel drive and mounting the engine longitudinally as opposed to transverse.

You might be better off just selling your current car and buying a newer vehicle with a more powerful engine. Projects are cool, but unless it is something you really want to do, it can be hard to justify the cost. With that being said, it can also be lots of fun and very satisfying to build something that a company never imported or never even thought of.

Why do you want to swap engines? You can also try some performance chips and parts.
