1986 E30 316/S52 swap: Need to swap clusters?

I have an UK-spec (RHD) 316 that i've swapped a Us-Spec S52 into.

currently i have it all hooked up to my 316 instrument cluster, but im hearing that a swap over to a 325i cluster is needed.

yes/no? and why?
and can i just pull out the individual gauges i'll need to plug&play to my cluster?

also, i just bought a 1987 325ix (from germany) to use as a parts car.
will that cluster/gauges work for my 316 to get everything working properly?
